Dallas Summer Musicals offers programs to get kids involved in the world of musical theater. My daughter Gigi discovered her passion for the musical theater stage at age 5 when she took a summer camp with Dallas Summer Musicals Academy. She dropped ballet and has been a student with the DSM Academy ever since. Realizing that besides being a football and polo mom to my boys, I would now forever be a theater mom, I rolled off the board at Dress for Success to accept Michael Jenkins invitation to join the Dallas Summer Musicals Board. I encourage getting kids out to the theater, whether its musical, opera, drama, whatever, the Arts are so important and introducing them at a young age is key to getting them engaged. The DSM Kids Club is a great introduction to musical theater. Join Gigi and I Saturday, December 12 in the Music Hall at Fair Park lobby before the 1;30 matinee showing of ELF the Musical. The fun starts at 11:30. Register online, its FREE! Members of the DSM KIDS CLUB get to join in lots of fun activities like arts and crafts, learning exciting Broadway facts, meet and take photos with members of the cast, and get your Playbill autographed. You don’t need a ticket to the show to participate in the event. It is highly recommended that you purchase your tickets to the respective show for the matinee performance on the date of the event. These shows are family-friendly and are a great opportunity for your child or children to enjoy a true Broadway musical.
Is your child a little performer? Love to sing, dance, act or all three? The Dallas Summer Musicals Academy is a great arena to develop your child’s talents and love for the theater. Kevin Cook, the Director of Education earned his B.A. in Theatre Arts from the University of Richmond in Virginia and his M.A. with an emphasis in writing and directing for the theatre from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Kevin spent many years touring as a professional actor before settling down to teach acting as well as to create and manage theatre productions. Kevin’s theatre management includes productions with Penn and Teller, Kathy Bates, Farrah Fawcett, Gary Sinese, Lynn Redgrave, John Mahoney and Holly Hunter (all NYC), Sheena Easton (Las Vegas), David Cassidy (Las Vegas, National and International Tours) as well as one of the largest production shows in the world MGM Grand’s EFX (Las Vegas). The entire staff are just as amazing, have been with the Academy longer than we have, no turn over of teachers is a great sign! Your kids will love Miss Ty, Miss Amanda and all of the talented crew.
The Spring Musical begins in January with performances in April. Gigi will be in “Schoolhouse Rock” with kids up to age 12, for the older kids “Spoon River” is an option.
